The Story Behind the Photo: The Na Pali Coast from a Tour Boat

Sometimes you just get lucky.  Although, being "out there" a lot does seem to result in more "luck events".   I've never gotten a great landscape photo from inside the house.

The photo below of the Na Pali coast, Kauai, was taken from a tour boat.  Taking (really good) photos from a tour boat can be difficult.  First, up on the very narrow deck, I had to avoid the other tourists who moved around quickly, often with little notice, and who could run into me or my camera.  The water was rough that day, so I had to watch for "splashes" and quickly point the camera the other way to avoid getting the lens wet.  I did that a lot.  The boat was pitching pretty hard, so it was difficult to both keep my balance, and to frame the shots that I wanted.  All of that combined kept me busy and kept me from noticing what is in the lower right corner of the shot: several dolphins jumping out of the water.

I never saw them until I processed the photo.  Very cool.
